Concluding thoughts - Righteousness in Job

Since most commentators place the story of Job at the time of the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob), it raises some questions. For one, why didn't God use one of the Patriarchs to point out to Satan a "righteous" man who belonged to Him? Also, since the Bible is focused on the theme of Israel, why include this story of a man not of Israel? ...

We have already begun looking at this literary genre with Job, and you can see why people have struggled to understand how to interpret the truth with this style of writing. Poetry tends to emphasize emotion, and to use figures of speech that must be understood as such an expression of emotion, not necessarily literal fact as if no figures of speech were used...

Job's Defense - God's Grace

Scholars of faith recognize that Job resoundingly presents God's sovereignty, and shows man's correct response: to humbly accept whatever God does, as no one has a right to dispute God. However, people often miss the great kindness God shows Job in allowing Satan to so test him! The benefit is to Job: eternal benefit. Satan levels a terrible accusation against Job: that like all fallen mankind he only (selfishly) worships God because of the good that God does for him. If this accusation were allowed to stand, it would require that Job face eternity condemned. You might expect God to simply refute Satan's claim, but Satan had already said that God was wrong in His evaluation of Job...
