Psalms as a National book

Looking at the Psalms in our reading, you may have noticed how the "flow" of the theme has a national flavor for Israel. In Psalm 147 the focus is on the restoration of Jerusalem, but the details of the praise don't fit the historic rebuilding after the return from exile under Nehemiah. Instead, the blessings clearly look forward to the way God will restore Jerusalem in the future Kingdom. This is especially clear in verses 12-20. This also concludes noting:

Fitting the Poetic Books in History

Unless we realize the context under which each poetic book is written we may read them as if they were written directly to us in our culture, and thus misunderstand them. Psalms extend from before David was king, through his reign and beyond, but within the Mosaic covenant rule...
